Transcultural Dynamics: Paradigms Then and Now

Call for Papers To all interested Master's and PhD candidates

Deadline: February 29th, 2020

The Heidelberg Centre for Transcultural Studies (HCTS) is a central institute of Heidelberg University and was established in 2013 as a continuation of the Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe in a Global Context," founded in 2007. The founding principle of the institute is the perspective that cultures are not homogeneous, static or self-contained entities, but instead are always already engaged in interactions, and formed through these dynamics. Since its inception, projects at the HCTS have sought to re-examine common assumptions about the formation of cultural boundaries, the processes of these formations, and the role these formations play in academic discourse – whether through the elaboration of a theoretical framework or by deploying transculturality as a methodological lens through which one might examine particular cases. This year, we invite submissions from across the disciplines which reflect upon varied transcultural dynamics and mechanisms with an intention to nuance or transform our understanding and assumptions about culture. How might a transcultural perspective reveal the hidden, unseen, or often overlooked dimensions of our experience and our understanding of the world? How might these revised and renewed understandings in turn inform the foundling field of transcultural studies and our theory-making?

For our 2020 student conference Transcultural Dynamics: Paradigms Then and Now, we invite submissions that utilise transcultural theories to address these questions either in a contemporary or historical context. We welcome submissions from fields such as history, cultural studies, political science, gender studies, media studies, art history, anthropology, religious studies, and any other disciplinary (or interdisciplinary) background which may identify with the transcultural ethos or find utility in its theories. We highly encourage submissions that reconsider or question classical paradigms and narratives we have both within and beyond academia.

In addition to the traditional format of oral or poster presentations, the Transcultural Studies Student Conference aspires to foster an innovative and experimental platform and we are thus open to and encourage proposals of unconventional formats. Participants who wish to submit posters may also take part in a poster exhibition around the campus. If you are interested in an alternative mode of presentation, please include an additional statement detailing your vision, format, and logistical requirements, so that we may make arrangements accordingly. Please note that the maximum reimbursement for each participant remains the same regardless of your choice of format. Submissions

Submission

To apply for the conference, please fill out the following google form available here by March 7th. Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application by March 20th. Once accepted, presenters need to confirm their participation by March 27th. The conference itself will take place on May 15th at the Karl Jaspers Centre for Advanced Transcultural Studies in Heidelberg, Germany.

Potential Funding

We offer each presenter a maximum of 150 euro of reimbursement: up to 100 euro for travel and up to 50 euro for accommodation. The final amount of reimbursement will be determined on a case-by-case basis, and receipts must be presented for successful reimbursement. Additionally, homestay arrangements with student volunteers may be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
